    Cloud migration remains one of the most impactful investments an enterprise can make, but it's also one of the most complex. A poorly planned migration can result in cost overruns, performance issues, security gaps, and frustrated teams. Here's how to get it right.

    Phase 1: Assessment and Discovery

    Before moving anything, you need a complete picture of your current environment. Catalogue every application, database, and service. Document dependencies, performance requirements, and compliance constraints. Identify which workloads are cloud-ready and which need refactoring.

    Phase 2: Strategy Selection

    Not every workload should migrate the same way. The industry-standard '6 Rs' framework provides a useful lens: Rehost (lift and shift), Replatform (lift and optimise), Refactor (rebuild), Repurchase (replace with SaaS), Retire (decommission), and Retain (keep on-premises). The right strategy depends on each workload's business value, technical complexity, and strategic importance.

    Phase 3: Foundation Building

    Set up your cloud environment with security, governance, and cost management built in from day one. This includes identity and access management, network architecture, monitoring and logging, backup and disaster recovery, and cost allocation tags. Skipping this step is the most common cause of cloud sprawl and security incidents.

    Phase 4: Migration Execution

    Start with lower-risk workloads to build confidence and refine your processes. Migrate in waves, validating each batch before proceeding to the next. Maintain rollback capabilities until you've confirmed everything is working correctly in the cloud environment.

    Phase 5: Optimisation

    Migration is just the beginning. Cloud optimisation is an ongoing discipline that includes right-sizing instances, leveraging reserved capacity, implementing auto-scaling, and continuously monitoring for waste. Companies that invest in cloud optimisation typically reduce their cloud spend by 20-30% within the first year.

    Common Pitfalls to Avoid

    Underestimating data transfer costs. Moving large datasets to the cloud can be expensive. Plan for this and consider options like direct connect or physical data transfer for large volumes.

    Ignoring training needs. Cloud platforms require different skills than on-premises environments. Invest in training for your operations, development, and security teams.

    Treating cloud like a data centre. Simply replicating your on-premises architecture in the cloud misses the point. Cloud-native services like managed databases, serverless functions, and container orchestration can dramatically reduce operational overhead.
